Donating Goods to HSP

HSP does various drives throughout the year to support our participants. Please check our Facebook page for current ongoing needs. We also accept certain new and gently used items that we distribute to our most in-need participants. Please see our Amazon Wish List for the following items we accept.  We are not able to accept used mattresses or used baby items including swings, saucers, walkers, and car seats.

Please contact Vickie Slinkman, Director of Development, at vslinkman@hspinc.org or (410) 386-6648 prior to making a donation to ensure we can accommodate your donation as our storage space is limited.

Making a Meal

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we are able to provide dinner every day for our Night-by-Night shelter participants. For many, it may be their only meal of the day — a moment of comfort, connection, and dignity.  There are a few nights that we are in need of prepared meals for approximately 40 participants.  There are a number of ways that you can help:

  • Prepare and deliver a full meal.  Ideas for meals include soups, stews, casseroles, burritos, and sandwiches.  Gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options are also appreciated.
  • Deliver a frozen meal that can be reheated later.
  • Provide a donation to allow our team to purchase a meal (approximately $150).
  • Support a local restaurant through carryout or delivery to the shelter.

We ask that the meal be delivered to the shelter (127 Stoner Avenue, Westminster) between 6:30-7:00 pm in disposable serving containers.  We provide utensils, plates, napkins and serve the participants so we only ask for the meal itself.  If you’re able and would like to contribute, we’re gratefully accepting bottled water donations as well.

If you or your family, church, business or civic group are interested in providing a meal, please reach out to Vickie Slinkman, Director of Development, at vslinkman@hspinc.org or (410) 386-6648.

Volunteering

HSP occasionally has opportunities for volunteers to support our work. If you’re interested in getting involved, we invite you to reach out to Vickie Slinkman, Director of Development, at vslinkman@hspinc.org or (410) 386-6648, to discuss your interests, how they align with our current needs, and to learn more about our screening process. We’d love to connect with you!

HSP is actively recruiting volunteers for our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.  Please review the volunteer descriptions below and reach out if interested.

  • INTAKE/WELCOMER – Greets taxpayer(s) when they arrive for their appointment and gains an initial understanding of their household/tax filing situation and income sources; assists them with filling out and signing required intake paperwork; makes copies of photo ID’s, Social Security Cards, and all pertinent tax documents; creates a folder to be passed on to a tax preparer.  Attention to detail and enjoying face-to-face interaction with people is important for this position.
  • TAX PREPARER- Receives completed folders from Intake to complete the tax return in Tax Slayer software; will use IRS publications & resources along with collaborating with other tax preparers to perform tax preparation. No formal financial or tax experience is necessary, but having an affinity for numbers and some accounting/financial background is necessary for this position … as is strong attention to detail with data entry.
  • ADMIN/SCHEDULER – Takes inbound calls and collects basic information to schedule intake appointments and answer general questions; makes outbound calls to schedule signing appointments or reaches out to people for missing tax documents that we still need; makes copies of blank intake documents and assembles new intake folders; alphabetically files completed folders. Enjoying talking to people over the phone is important for this position.
** For all of these positions … we work as a united VITA team, so there will always be more experienced people on hand to lean on for help whenever needed.
** Full training and certifications for all of these positions will be completed in-person as a group in early January. Live appointments will start near the end of January and will stop on or around April 10th.
