Chris began his journey with HSP in January 2023 at the Night-By-Night Shelter and later transitioned to the Adult-Only Shelter in March of that year. Since then, he has worked diligently to prepare for his move into Permanent Supportive Housing and to achieve his goal of becoming a Peer Support Specialist.  In addition to his personal progress, Chris joined the Lived Expertise Advisory Board with the Continuum of Care Executive Committee, where he provides valuable insight into homelessness based on his lived experience. His voice at the decision-making table helps agencies better understand the realities faced by those experiencing homelessness, ensuring that their perspectives are represented and heard.

Chris has faced significant challenges throughout his life, including struggles with alcohol addiction and mental health. Reflecting on his past, he shared “I drank myself from 14 to 48. I had a liver transplant but continued to drink. I’ve been clean and sober for two years.”

Today, Chris is committed to using his recovery and experience to help others facing similar challenges. Joanna Waters, Shelter Services Manager, shared “Chris has a genuine need to help and support others and cares deeply. He will see a need in the homeless community and start working on fixing it.”  Since May 2025, Chris has been successfully housed through the Permanent Supportive Housing program. He continues to maintain his sobriety and regularly checks in with his neighbors in the program, offering encouragement and support.
